Somerville Public Schools and the School of HONK are offering a two week morning day camp for anyone who wants to learn the basics and enjoy the delights of playing in a brass street band, like the bands that come to Somerville's annual HONK! Festival.
Our approach is all about having fun playing lively dance music from American and other street band traditions - from Lavoe & Colón's "La Murga De Panama" to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" -- with tunes and arrangements for players at all levels.
Open to anyone, playing brass, woodwinds or percussion, preferably with at least one year’s experience on a chosen instrument. Families are encouraged to apply. Cost for the two weeks is $160 ($80/ wk); family discounts and some scholarships may be available for students who need them.

Towards Predictive Biology with Extreme Computing

Speaker: Fred Streitz, Ph.D., Director, HPC Innovation Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Lawrence Livermore has a long history of fielding some of the world’s largest computers, fueled by our nearly insatiable need for both capacity and capability computing. Each new generation of computing brings with it the ability to perform simulations that were impossible with earlier computers. Streitz will discuss the development of a real-time, high-resolution model of the electrophysiology of a beating human heart on the Sequoia supercomputer at LLNL, and growing efforts to extend such models towards true predictive biology. This work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract DE--AC52--07NA27344.

He was Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2005 to 2007. Among other roles, he was Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office from 2007 to 2010 and Shadow Foreign Secretary from 2000 to 2001. After a career at the criminal bar between 1977 and 1985, he served as a councillor for the City of Westminster for 6 years. His other jobs outside politics have included being a non-executive director of ASDA Group, director at Salomon Brothers and managing director of Morgan Stanley. Lord Maude was previously Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General from May 2010 to May 2015 where he led innovative reforms to transform digital government in the UK, including the transition to the GOV.UK website.

Calling all Gamers and Game Designers! The word on everyone's lips is MegaGame. We're hosting an open discussion forum at MIT (special thanks to Rik Eberhardt and the MIT Game Lab) to talk about MegaGames.
Whether you've seen the Shut Up and Sit Down videos, played a MegaGame yourself, or are just interested in the idea of 60+ people playing the same game, we want to hear your thoughts! It's safe to assume that every game designer who has looked at a MegaGame has proceeded to stroke their chin and murmur, "I could do that better."
We want to bring Game Designers and MegaGame Enthusiasts together to give everyone a chance to share their ideas and talk about what does and doesn't work in a MegaGame. We'll spend some time discussing the mechanics and logistics of MegaGames, different themes and concepts possible in MegaGames, and maybe take a few moments to play and test parts of each other's games (time permitting).
Who are we? MegaGames United is a volunteer group who has put on one successful MegaGame here in Boston. We're working on a free, open-source MegaGame inspired by Watch the Skies, that, once completed, will be free for anyone to use. Olivier Sylvain, Associate Professor, Fordham School of Law
One of the few clear priorities of the federal Communications Act is to ensure that all Americans have reasonably comparable access to the Internet without respect to whom or where they are. Yet, in spite of this, the main focus of policymakers and legal scholars in Internet policy today has been on promoting innovation, a concept that Congress barely invokes in the statute. The flagship regulatory intervention for this approach is “network neutrality,” a rule that forbids Internet providers from blocking or interfering with users’ connections. This Article critiques this prevailing approach. While it has virtue, the singular focus on innovation could starkly exacerbate existing racial, ethnic, and class disparities because the quality of users’ Internet connections refract through those persistent demographic variables. The Article thus calls for a fundamental return to the distributional equality principle at the heart of communications law.
About Olivier
Olivier Sylvain's academic interests include the public lawmaking processes generally and communications law and policy in particular. He has written a variety of law review articles, policy papers, newspaper columns, and blog posts on current controversies in broadband policy, Internet governance, privacy, and copyright. His most recent research projects are Network Equality, 67 Hastings L. J. __ (forthcoming in 2016), on the FCC’s 2015 Open Internet rulemaking, Disruption and Deference, 74 Maryland L. Rev. 715 (2015), on the Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in ABC v. Aereo on the public performance right and online video distribution, and Failing Expectations: Fourth Amendment Doctrine in the Era of Total Surveillance, 49 Wake Forest L. Rev. 485 (2014), on the third-party doctrine. He has also been an invited panelist and speaker at several recent conferences and symposia on Internet governance.
At Fordham, Olivier teaches Legislation and Regulation, Administrative Law, and Internet-related courses. He is also a Research Associate at the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center. Before entering academia, Olivier was a Karpatkin Fellow in the National Legal Office of the American Civil Liberties Union in New York City and a litigation associate at Jenner & Block, LLC, in Washington, D.C.

Does money buy happiness? Harvard Business School Professor Michael Norton shows that it sometimes can - when you follow five core principles of smarter spending. Michael is the co-author, with Elizabeth Dunn, of Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending, and he's joining us on Tuesday July 14th for a special talk about his research and book.
Their book provides five research-based principles designed to help people use their money in happier ways - whether they have a little or a lot of it. The book is full of recent research and examples that range from how individuals gain happiness by choosing "experiences over stuff" to how companies seek to create happier employees and 'happier products' for their customers.

One of the few clear priorities of the federal Communications Act is to ensure that all Americans have reasonably comparable access to the Internet without respect to whom or where they are. Yet, in spite of this, the main focus of policymakers and legal scholars in Internet policy today has been on promoting innovation, a concept that Congress barely invokes in the statute. The flagship regulatory intervention for this approach is “network neutrality,” a rule that forbids Internet providers from blocking or interfering with users’ connections. This Article critiques this prevailing approach. While it has virtue, the singular focus on innovation could starkly exacerbate existing racial, ethnic, and class disparities because the quality of users’ Internet connections refract through those persistent demographic variables. The Article thus calls for a fundamental return to the distributional equality principle at the heart of communications law.
About Olivier
Olivier Sylvain's academic interests include the public lawmaking processes generally and communications law and policy in particular. He has written a variety of law review articles, policy papers, newspaper columns, and blog posts on current controversies in broadband policy, Internet governance, privacy, and copyright. His most recent research projects are Network Equality, 67 Hastings L. J. __ (forthcoming in 2016), on the FCC’s 2015 Open Internet rulemaking, Disruption and Deference, 74 Maryland L. Rev. 715 (2015), on the Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in ABC v. Aereo on the public performance right and online video distribution, and Failing Expectations: Fourth Amendment Doctrine in the Era of Total Surveillance, 49 Wake Forest L. Rev. 485 (2014), on the third-party doctrine. He has also been an invited panelist and speaker at several recent conferences and symposia on Internet governance.
At Fordham, Olivier teaches Legislation and Regulation, Administrative Law, and Internet-related courses. He is also a Research Associate at the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center. Before entering academia, Olivier was a Karpatkin Fellow in the National Legal Office of the American Civil Liberties Union in New York City and a litigation associate at Jenner & Block, LLC, in Washington, D.C.

Does money buy happiness? Harvard Business School Professor Michael Norton shows that it sometimes can - when you follow five core principles of smarter spending. Michael is the co-author, with Elizabeth Dunn, of Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending, and he's joining us on Tuesday July 14th for a special talk about his research and book.
Their book provides five research-based principles designed to help people use their money in happier ways - whether they have a little or a lot of it. The book is full of recent research and examples that range from how individuals gain happiness by choosing "experiences over stuff" to how companies seek to create happier employees and 'happier products' for their customers.

For 9-1/2 years, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has been coasting towards a fateful encounter with Pluto and its moons. On July 14, it will arrive! After a journey of nearly a decade, its Close Encounter phase will last just 48 hours. During the busiest hours of the flyby - including the moment of closest approach - the spacecraft will be too busy to communicate with Earth as it soaks up all the data it can during its mad dash through the Pluto system. Once it resumes transmitting, it will still take an additional four hours for its signals, traveling at the speed of light, to reach Earth! But a lot could go wrong. At the speed it's moving, it wouldn't take much of a high-speed impact with any undiscovered moon, possible ring, or other unseen debris to disable or destroy the spacecraft just as it's making its closest approach to the planet. Will New Horizons survive long enough to "Phone Home" and send us its treasure trove of images and measurements? We'll know the minute that NASA does! We'll be presenting a Live NASA TV broadcast from the Mission Operations Center, including interviews, videos, and status updates, right up until the receipt of the spacecraft's "I survived" chirp (expected at 9:09 pm)! Afterwards, if it's clear, we'll have telescopes on the roof aimed at Pluto's location in the sky (plus other targets of opportunity). Pluto is too faint to be visible even in our telescopes, but it's possible a few photons reflected by the planet may hit our retinas! It should all be great fun, as we'll have a raffle, photo opsin front of an artistic Pluto landscape, 3-D-printed models of New Horizons, and who knows what else! This will probably be the last time in our lives that we will be seeing a "New World" up close for the very first time. Don't miss your chance!

Understanding the adaptations that facilitate and maintain the relationships between the members of this co-evolutionary triangle can give us insight into the fascinating biology of malaria, and also provide keys to controlling or eventually eliminating this disease. Daniel Neafsey, associate director of the Broad’s Genomic Center for Infectious Disease, will describe how recent developments in genome sequencing are giving us new perspectives on malaria, a disease that has been called the strongest known force of evolutionary selection in the recent history of the human genome.

Microrobots are miniature robots at the microscale with exciting applications in biomedicine. In addition to discussing how such tiny devices can be built and powered, we will also talk about how these devices can be used in real-world applications.
Dr. Schürle’s is currently at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT where she is applying microrobotic control strategies in cancer diagnosis and therapy. She is also co-founder of MagnebotiX, a young spin-off company from ETH focusing on magnetic manipulation systems for crystallography applications.

For almost twenty years, D Acres of New Hampshire has challenged and expanded the common definition of a farm. As an educational center that researches, applies, and teaches skills of sustainable living and small-scale organic farming, D Acres serves more than just a single function to its community. By turns it is a hostel for travelers to northern New England, a training center for everything from metal- and woodworking to cob building and seasonal cooking, a gathering place for music, poetry, joke-telling, and potluck meals, and much more.
Josh Trought helped to found D Acres of New Hampshire in 1997, and today serves as its director. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in environmental conservation, and has worked for organizations as diverse as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Costa Rica’s Tapantí National Park. Currently he is a member of the Artistic Roots co-op in Plymouth, New Hampshire, and serves as treasurer of the Pemi-Baker Solid Waste District. His proudest accomplishments are as a participant at the Bread and Puppet Theater; at La Caravana Arcoiris por la Paz, a mobile ecovillage that traveled across Central and South America; and at D Acres, where he has specialized in forestry, construction, gardening, and administration. The primary motivation behind his life’s work is the healthy perpetuation of our species within its various, diverse ecologies.

Kill the Messenger takes place in the mid 1990s, when Gary Webb uncovered the CIA's past role in importing huge amounts of cocaine into the U.S. that was aggressively sold in ghettos across the country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Despite enormous pressure not to, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public with his evidence, publishing his series 'Dark Alliance' in the San Jose Mercury News in 1996.
As a result Gary experienced a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA. At that point Webb found himself defending his integrity, his family, and his life.

Does the universe embody beautiful ideas?
Artists as well as scientists throughout human history have pondered this “beautiful question.” With Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek as your guide, embark on a voyage of related discoveries, from Plato and Pythagoras up to the present. Wilczek’s groundbreaking work in quantum physics was inspired by his intuition to look for a deeper order of beauty in nature. In fact, every major advance in his career came from this intuition: to assume that the universe embodies beautiful forms, forms whose hallmarks are symmetry—harmony, balance, proportion—and economy. There are other meanings of “beauty,” but this is the deep logic of the universe—and it is no accident that it is also at the heart of what we find aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.
Wilczek is hardly alone among great scientists in charting his course using beauty as his compass. As he reveals in A Beautiful Question, this has been the heart of scientific pursuit from Pythagoras, the ancient Greek who was the first to argue that “all things are number,” to Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, and into the deep waters of twentieth century physics. Though the ancients weren’t right about everything, their ardent belief in the music of the spheres has proved true down to the quantum level. Indeed, Wilczek explores just how intertwined our ideas about beauty and art are with our scientific understanding of the cosmos.
Wilczek brings us right to the edge of knowledge today, where the core insights of even the craziest quantum ideas apply principles we all understand. The equations for atoms and light are almost literally the same equations that govern musical instruments and sound; the subatomic particles that are responsible for most of our mass are determined by simple geometric symmetries. The universe itself, suggests Wilczek, seems to want to embody beautiful and elegant forms. Perhaps this force is the pure elegance of numbers, perhaps the work of a higher being, or somewhere between. Either way, we don’t depart from the infinite and infinitesimal after all; we’re profoundly connected to them, and we connect them. Harvard Book Store welcomes JOSEPH LEDOUX, a professor of psychology at New York University, for a discussion of his book Anxious: Using the Brain to Understand and Treat Fear and Anxiety.
Collectively, anxiety disorders are our most prevalent psychiatric problem, affecting about forty million adults in the United States. In Anxious, Joseph LeDoux, whose NYU lab has been at the forefront of research efforts to understand and treat fear and anxiety, explains the range of these disorders, their origins, and discoveries that can restore sufferers to normalcy.
LeDoux’s groundbreaking premise is that we’ve been thinking about fear and anxiety in the wrong way. These are not innate states waiting to be unleashed from the brain, but experiences that we assemble cognitively. Treatment of these problems must address both their conscious manifestations and underlying non-conscious processes. While knowledge about how the brain works will help us discover new drugs, LeDoux argues that the greatest breakthroughs may come from using brain research to help reshape psychotherapy.

Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (BLC) is a nonprofit based in the Cambridge, MA area. Our mission is to mobilize the biosphere to restore ecosystems and reverse global warming.
Education, public information campaigns, organizing, scientific investigation, collaboration with like-minded organizations, research and policy development are all elements of our strategy.
Background: Soils are the largest terrestrial carbon sink on the planet. Restoring the complex ecology of soils is the only way to safely and quickly remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the ground, where it’s desperately needed to regenerate the health of billions of acres of degraded lands. Restoring carbon to soils and regenerating ecosystems are how we can restore a healthy hydrologic cycle and cool local and planetary climates safely, naturally, and in time to ensure a livable climate now and in the future.
Our Work: immediate plans include
Organizing the First International Biodiversity, Soil Carbon and Climate Week, October 31-November 9, 2014, and a kick-off conference in the Boston area, “Mobilizing the Biosphere to Reverse Global Warming: A Biodiversity, Water, Soil Carbon and Climate Conference – and Call to Action” to expand the mainstream climate conversation to include the power of biology, and to help initiate intensive worldwide efforts to return atmospheric carbon to the soils.
Coordination of a global fund to directly assist local farmers and herders in learning and applying carbon farming approaches that not only benefit the climate, but improve the health and productivity of the land and the people who depend on it.
Collaboration with individuals and organizations on addressing eco-restoration and the regeneration of water and carbon cycles; such projects may include application of practices such as Holistic Management for restoration of billions of acres of degraded grasslands, reforestation of exploited forest areas, and restoring ocean food chains.

Have you ever wanted to learn where your home is leaking heat by having an energy auditor come to your home with a thermal camera? With that info you then know where to fix your home so it's more comfortable and less expensive to heat. However, at $200 or so, the cost of such a thermal scan is a big chunk of change.
HEET Cambridge has now partnered with Sagewell, Inc. to offer Cambridge residents free thermal scans.
Sagewell collects the thermal images by driving through Cambridge in a hybrid vehicle equipped with thermal cameras. They will scan every building in Cambridge (as long as it's not blocked by trees or buildings or on a private way). Building owners can view thermal images of their property and an analysis online. The information is password protected so that only the building owner can see the results.
Homeowners, condo-owners and landlords can access the thermal images and an accompanying analysis free of charge. Commercial building owners and owners of more than one building will be able to view their images and analysis for a small fee.
The scans will be analyzed in the order they are requested.
Go to Sagewell.com. Type in your address at the bottom where it says "Find your home or building" and press return. Then click on "Here" to request the report.
That's it. When the scans are done in a few weeks, your building will be one of the first to be analyzed. The accompanying report will help you understand why your living room has always been cold and what to do about it.

Boston Food System
"The Boston Food System [listserv] provides a forum to post announcements of events, employment opportunities, internships, programs, lectures, and other activities as well as related articles or other publications of a non-commercial nature covering the area's food system - food, nutrition, farming, education, etc. - that take place or focus on or around Greater Boston (broadly delineated)."
The Boston area is one of the most active nationwide in terms of food system activities - projects, services, and events connected to food, farming, nutrition - and often connected to education, public health, environment, arts, social services and other arenas. Hundreds of organizations and enterprises cover our area, but what is going on week-to-week is not always well publicized.
Hence, the new Boston Food System listserv, as the place to let everyone know about these activities. Specifically:
Use of the BFS list will begin soon, once we get a decent base of subscribers. Clarification of what is appropriate to announce and other posting guidelines will be provided as well.

BNID has played an important auxiliary role in fostering international development activities in the Boston area, as witnessed by the expanding content of the site and a significant growth in the number of users.
